A group of Afghan women spoke to the headquarters of the UN Security Council in New York, asking that the United Nations should not allow Afghanistan to be represented at the UN by the Taliban.
“It’s very simple,” former Afghan politician Fawzia Kufi said in front of the UN Security Council headquarters. “The UN should make room for someone who respects the rights of the entire Afghan people,” she said.
“You talk a lot about us, but you don’t listen to us,” Kufi said of Afghan women. “Aid, money, recognition are all cards that the world must use to defend the rights of women in Afghanistan and the rights of everyone,” she added.
Former politician Nahid Farid, former diplomat Asila Wardak and journalist Anisa Shahid attended the conference outside the UN Security Council headquarters with Kufi. “When the Taliban took over Afghanistan … they said they would allow women to go back to work, back to school, but they didn’t keep their promises,” Farid said.
At present, Afghanistan in the UN is represented by Ghulam Isachay, who was nominated for this position by the Afghan government overthrown by the Taliban. The Taliban have appointed Suheil Shahin as their UN representative. By the end of the year, the UN countries must decide who will be the representative of Afghanistan at the forum of the organization.
Asilah Wardak called on countries around the world to put pressure on the Taliban to “make their promises a reality” when it comes to human rights. “If you want to give them a place (in the UN), they must meet the conditions,” she added.
Ghulam Isachay addressed the UN Security Council on Thursday. “Afghan women and girls are pinning their hopes and dreams on this council and the international community, which can help them regain their right to work, travel and study,” the Afghan Ambassador to the UN said.
